International Women's Day

We are going to celebrate International Women's Day on the 8th of March and this year the theme of International Women's Day is "I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women's Rights".

The United Nations started celebrating “International Women's Day” on 8 March 1975. This year will also be the 25th anniversary of the “Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action—a progressive roadmap for gender equality,” which is recognized as the most progressive roadmap for the welfare and empowerment of women worldwide.

International Women's Day is celebrated to increase gender equality in society. We have achieved so much in the field of Science and Technology, Politics, Humanities, and so on; still the number of women in parliamentary seat worldwide is still 24%, and the earning is 23% less than the men globally, 1 in 3 experience sexual and physical violence and so many girls and women suffer genital mutilation [1].

To increase gender equality, it is under the “UN Sustainable Development Goals[2and the goal number of gender equality is: Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, which states that the discrimination on the basis of gender in political and economic field, in health care, in education, in decent work should be eliminated. Elimination of any kind of violence, child marriages, female genital mutilation, discrimination in offices, in parliamentary, leaderships, and public life.

Some facts and figures [2]:

  • In 18 countries, Husband can legally avoid their wives to work, in 39 countries the inheritance law and rights are not equal and in 49 countries do not have any law to prevent domestic laws.
  • Approximately 750 million girls and women get married before the age of 18 and approximately 200 million girls have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM).
  • The FGM rate in girls of age 15–19 in 30 countries where the FGM was a practiced has been dropped, in 2000 the rate was 1 in 2 girls and in 2017 the rate was 1 in 3 girls.
  • Approximately 52% of women can not decide their own choice about contraceptives and sexual decisions.
  • On a global scale, only 13% of women are agricultural landholders.

To stop these cruelties and discriminations, international women's day is celebrated and work should be done on the ground level to prevent all kinds of discrimination against women.

The statement of the UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuks for International Women’s Day is “the year 2020 will be the year of equality and participation from all required to tackle the gender-biased in society” [3].

On 6 March 2020, The United Nations Observance of International Women Day 2020 will be held at United Nations Secretariat located in New York. All the women and girl leaders from so many fields will come together and discuss and suggest how to tackle and fights against discrimination and get equality [4].
